Overview

The Department of Earth Science at Utah Valley University (UVU) invites applications for a tenure-track position in Geology, to begin August 2017. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. in geology or a closely related field and expertise in igneous and/or metamorphic petrology at the time of appointment. Responsibilities will include teaching introductory geology and upper division courses in earth materials and petrology, engaging in research and supervision of undergraduate research, and service to the institution. Excellent teaching skills and a strong commitment to effective teaching are necessary.

UVU, located in Orem, Utah, is a fast-growing comprehensive state institution of higher education with over 30,000 students and strong support for undergraduate research. The school sits at the western front of the Wasatch Mountains, with superb opportunities for field-based teaching and research. The Department of Earth Science has a 13-member faculty and offers B.S. programs in Geology, Environmental Science & Management, and Earth Science Education. It has excellent facilities, including a Bruker pXRF, ICP-OES, SEM (EDX and CL – capable), and a set of binocular petrographic teaching microscopes, as well as a range of geophysical, geochemical, remote sensing, surveying, and computing resources. The department also has strong ties to the University of Utah, Brigham Young University, and Utah State University as well as local industry and governmental organizations.

Orem has easy access to numerous outdoor recreational activities such as snow sports, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, fishing, and hunting.
