Overview

The University of Michigan-Flint invites applications for appointment as a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Experimental Physics beginning Fall 2017.

Minimum requirements are as follows:
1. Advanced ABD’s who will complete their Ph.D. by the time of appointment will also be considered.
2. Potential for or evidence of high quality teaching in an undergraduate physics program,
3. Record of published research and promise of future productivity.

Preference will be given to the candidate who has the following qualifications:

1. Previous teaching experience in undergraduate physics courses beyond laboratory instruction. Postdoctoral experience is desirable, but not required. Our introductory physics courses are taught using the studio/workshop model in two advanced active-learning classrooms. The candidate will be expected to employ active learning techniques commensurate with the studio/workshop model, and to extend active learning strategies to upper division courses.

2. The University of Michigan-Flint Physics program is host to a suite of excellent experimental equipment including an AFM, JEOL SEM (6330F) with EDAX, Benchtop TEM, Rigaku mini-Flex X-ray diffractometer, cryostats (ADP close-cycled, liquid helium), high-vacuum chambers, iS50FT-IR and UV/VIS spectrometers, and other optical equipment. Applicants whose research can employ these resources are preferred.

Duties include teaching a wide range of physics courses and advising students; developing a research program involving undergraduate students that leads to refereed publications along with securing the necessary resources for that program; performing professional service at the department, college, and university levels including student recruitment, as well as engagement of the community.
