Job Summary/Purpose:

To provide instruction to students in the Geology program or department, develop curriculum, assess student learning, and provide student advising.

Terms of Employment

  • Full-time Faculty, 1.0 FTE, Exempt. This is a fulltime, tenure-track probationary position commencing September 2018. Hours of work may include evening or weekend teaching assignments.
  • $48,350 – $58,850 per year depending on experience.
  • Represented by the Faculty Forum Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Initial assignment will be at the Bend Campus.
  • Official transcripts are required upon hire. Applicants anticipating Degree completion must supply a letter from his/her university stating the degree title and that the degree will be granted by that date.
  • Upon hire, must pass criminal background check and/or driving history; only information relevant to the position will be considered.
  • May include travel throughout the College district.

Essential Functions:

ESSENTIAL FACULTY FUNCTIONS

  • Provide instruction in Geology, using approved course outcomes. Teaching assignments may be during the day (including early morning), evening, or weekend, and could include classes taught at any of the College campuses (i.e. Bend, Madras, Prineville, Redmond, online, or other).
  • Provide student advising and assistance in areas of course selection, transfer, career planning, job placement and employment follow-up.
  • Hold at least five scheduled office hours per week for student help sessions and program assistance.
  • Participate in department meetings, curriculum revision, course assessment, program assessment, and academic program review.
  • Engage in regular professional growth activities, remain current in the field, and maintain current credentials or licensures as required by the program.
  • Participate in service to the college. This may include participating in College committees, taskforces, peer teams, or other activities.
  • Provide meaningful, professional service to the community, businesses, public agencies, and other organizations.
  • Perform other essential job functions as assigned that support the overall objective of the position.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS SPECIFIC TO Geology

  • Provide instruction in geology courses. These courses include both classroom and lab teaching and are primarily for students in a number of transfer, and career and technical programs at Central Oregon Community College (COCC). Instruction includes providing a syllabus to the students, learning assessments to gauge the students understanding of the material, and strategies for improving student performance. Full-time classroom teaching requires 45 load units per academic year (roughly 15 load units per quarter), currently involving 24 or 48 students per class, with a limit of 24 students per lab section. Teaching assignments will include courses taught during the early morning, daytime and/or evening, and classes taught at Bend, Redmond, Madras, and Prineville. With administrative approval and successful completion of the COCC Hybrid/Online Training (HOT) course, faculty also have the opportunity to teach hybrid-format and/or on-line classes.
  • Mentor Part-time Geology Instructors to help them achieve course outcomes and be effective with student learning and student success in their classrooms.
  • Act as a resource for students (e.g., provide letters of recommendations for college/university programs and/or scholarships).
  • Cooperate with other college personnel to assess outcomes at departmental and institutional levels, and assist students with career planning and job placement.
  • Perform other essential duties and tasks, as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that he or she can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation, using some other combination of skills and abilities.

  • Thorough knowledge in Geology and demonstrated ability to apply this knowledge.
  • Ability to adapt and use a variety of teaching and assessment techniques including the use of technology to enhance student success.
  • Ability to observe, direct, and oversee students ensuring safety in the classroom or laboratory.
  • Ability to work with and present various curriculum concepts to a wide range of students with varying diverse backgrounds, abilities, and learning styles.
  • Ability to effectively use Microsoft office suite, various course management systems, technology to teach traditional, hybrid, or online courses and other technology used in the instruction setting.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with diverse students, staff, and community members.

  • Willingness to travel and or teach at various hours and campus locations, as required.
  • Ability to foster a collaborative atmosphere among students and the willingness to work as a member of a team with faculty.

Physical Demands and Other Ergonomic Requirements:

Ability to work in classroom, laboratory, and office environments using computers, white boards, projectors, and other basic office equipment. All individuals are required to be able to perform the essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Geology.
  • A minimum of one year’s full-time teaching experience in geology and evidence of excellent teaching.

Special Qualifications:

  • A Ph.D. in Geology or other closely related scientific discipline.
  • Background and experience teaching oceanography and other science discipline courses.
  • Online and/or hybrid course delivery experience.
  • Additional years of community college teaching experience in geology.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of local and regional geology.
  • Experience with conducting field trips.
  • Work related experience in the field of geology.
  • Demonstrate innovation in content delivery, laboratory exercises, and/or student engagement.
