The successful candidate will possess a collegial and open management style, effective interpersonal communication skills and a knowledge of the special challenges of today’s community college student. In addition, the successful candidate will demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of:

This position reports directly to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and is responsible for providing academic leadership in areas such as the use of instructional technology, diversity of learning approaches, intellectual pursuits, and accountability. The Chair, in conjunction with faculty provides a vision for the future direction of the School of Arts and Sciences within the college’s strategic goals and mission. He/she provides leadership within the school for developing, achieving, and evaluating success of goals as they relate to the college.


  • Coordinates the development and modification of program curricula within the school; monitors currency and revision of goals and objectives for all the school’s courses; maintains common goals and objectives for multiple section classes taught; ensures standardized syllabus preparation; and promotes consistent course outcomes.
  • Under the direction of the Vice President of Academic Affairs, the Chair leads faculty in developing and implementing an effective plan for assessing course, program specific, and general education goals, as well as student academic achievement.
  • Promotes and facilitates faculty participation in student recruitment, advising, and retention activities.
  • The Chair functions as the faculty liaison with administration by holding regular faculty meetings and by attending regular meetings with the Vice President for Academic Affairs and other appropriate college committees and councils.
  • The Chair coordinates the development of class schedules, including decisions concerning class additions, deletions and cancellations; assignment of faculty to classes according to procedures; as well as monitors faculty load and course enrollments.
  • The incumbent coordinates the development of the school’s budget recommendation to the Vice President for Academic Affairs and monitors budget allocations.
  • The incumbent coordinates the school’s program and/or discipline review based upon the approved program review process, including facilitating responses to recommendations resulting from the review.
  • The Chair is to be actively involved in the development and achievement of annual enrollment objectives consistent with the overall needs and goals of the college especially as they relate to programs and courses under the auspices of the school.
  • The incumbent develops and provides periodic reports on activities within the school and completes state and national reporting requirements.
  • He/she performs other duties as assigned by the Vice President for Academic Affairs.


  • Master’s Degree in related field and must meet the minimum requirements for teaching within the school.
  • Must have a minimum of five years teaching experience in higher education, with at least two of those years at the community college level.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the mission and philosophy of the community college environment.
  • Ability to carry out assignments requiring the organization of material, analysis of data, and preparation of pertinent recommendations.
  • Considerable knowledge of the principles and practices of effective supervision.
  • Ability to express ideas effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrative personnel, faculty, classified staff, students and the general public.
  • Ability to work independently and simultaneously on projects of varied complexity, carrying out each to its conclusion with a very high level of effectiveness.
  • Ability to travel to on- and off-campus locations.
  • Ability to speak in public before large groups, tasks forces, or working committees and articulate controversial issues.
  • Experience that demonstrates resourceful approaches to handling budgetary matters that includes the ability to plan, develop, and manage complex budgets.
  • Experience exhibiting the highest standards of personal and professional integrity and credibility.
  • Must possess ability to exercise group leadership skills, which emphasize collaboration, consensus building, conflict resolution, and problem solving.
  • Must possess ability and willingness to manage multiple priorities and projects.
