The Department of Geological and Environmental Sciences at Appalachian State University, Boone, North Carolina, invites applications for a tenure-track nine-month faculty position at the rank of assistant professor beginning no later than 01 January 2019. The requirements for the position are a Ph.D. in geology, environmental science, or a related field. Candidates who are ABD will be considered, but the position requires completion of all doctoral requirements by the starting date. We seek a geoscientist with a specialty in earth surface processes to support the teaching of courses in engineering geology, quantitative analysis of earth and environmental processes and a discipline-specific writing course that is required for environmental science majors. The preferred candidate will have field and teaching experience in engineering geology, earth-surface processes and quantitative data analysis. The successful candidate will be expected to take advantage of the regional geology in teaching. Additional teaching responsibilities may include an introductory course such as physical geology or environmental geology, with other courses possible based on applicant’s specialty and student demand. The service component will involve helping with academic advising of students in the environmental science program as well as other departmental, university, and professional service tasks.
We seek a quantitative geoscientist with research expertise in the broad area of earth surface processes. Potential areas of research expertise include (but are not limited to): quantitative analysis of earth and environmental processes, glaciology, surface-water hydrology, and engineering geology. The successful candidate should complement the present group of earth and environmental scientists. The candidate should have a PhD at the time of appointment and must possess a strong commitment to both undergraduate education and field-based research.
