Overview

The successful candidate will teach a variety of Geography and GIS courses at the undergraduate level in a dynamic and proactive department. Courses are offered in diverse settings and milieus including traditional face to face, hybrid, and online. The incumbent will have an expected fifteen (15) faculty load hours per semester and is expected to be competent at teaching in both the community college setting and with our dual enrolled high-school students. With an emphasis on student engagement, the department has placed a priority on strengthening our instruction and experiential learning. The successful candidate will be expected to participate in departmental, student and college activities.

Duties

While faculty work of 30 faculty load hours an academic year will include primary responsibilities for teaching and assessing learning and for institutional service, advising, and professional development, the college seeks to break the frame that traditionally surrounds faculty assignments, especially since academic divisional needs vary. As such, faculty should expect to integrate with their primary responsibilities some combination of the following,

1. creating experiential learning opportunities and assessment techniques, (e.g., work-based and service learning; portfolio assessment, including developing and evaluating learning portfolios; etc.)

2. mentoring

* students from target groups

* new full-time faculty

* part-time faculty

3. designing, formatting and delivering curriculum for synchronous and asynchronous learning

4. training and consulting for workforce initiatives (e.g., for public and corporate partners, etc.)

5. developing and implementing community education and extended learning programs

6. partnering with colleagues to enhance services to students and the community

* recruiting and marketing

* advising with expanded responsibilities

* devising retention strategies and activities

7. strengthening relations and collaborative activities with K-12 and baccalaureate-granting colleagues

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree in Geography/GIS or a closely related subject
  • 24 graduate credit hours in Geography/GIS by the date of appointment
  • relevant teaching experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. in Geography/GIS or a closely related subject
