The Department of Biochemistry is expanding its faculty at the Assistant, Associate, or Full Professor rank (all ranks tenure-track) and is seeking investigators with innovative research programs that complement and expand existing departmental strengths in metabolism, neurobiology, cancer cell biology, protein biochemistry, biophysics, and regulation of gene expression. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and maintain an extramurally funded research program and demonstrate excellence in teaching graduate and professional level courses in biochemistry.

The Department of Biochemistry and West Virginia University provide a rich research environment including (with specific regards to metabolic research): 1) resources for analysis of body composition and measurement of metabolic parameters in whole animals and live cells ; 2) a newly completed 21,000 Sq.ft. state of the art addition to the animal facility that significantly upgrades the capacity for carrying out genetic manipulations and housing the mice; 3) state of the art imaging, genomics, metabolomics, and flow cytometry facilities; 4) a university-wide Mitochondria, Metabolism, and Bioenergetics Group; and 5) the West Virginia Clinical and Translational Science Institute.

Skills:

Priority will be given to investigators whose research focuses on the regulation of metabolism as it applies to metabolic diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, cancer or cardiovascular diseases. Minimum qualifications for the position are a PhD and/or MD plus at least two years of postdoctoral research with a demonstrated record of high quality research at all career levels. For consideration at the associate or full professor rank, the candidate must have a successful research program with sustained productivity and extramural funding support. Candidates at the associate or full professor rank with expertise in mass spectrometry will have an opportunity to provide leadership or consultation in the development and operation of the metabolomics core facility. All qualifications must be met by the time of appointment.

Byrd Health Sciences Center, which facilitates productive research interactions with the WVU Schools of Pharmacy, Dentistry, Nursing, and Public Health. Recent expansion at the Health Sciences Center includes new research buildings, which collectively provide approximately 200,000 sq. ft. of additional research space, to accommodate growth in research programs and core facilities. With a metropolitan population of over 130,000, Morgantown is consistently rated as one of the best small cities in the U.S., with an affordable cost of living, excellent schools, a picturesque countryside, and is famous for its outdoor recreational opportunities. Morgantown has a local airport and is located within a 1.5 and 3 hour drive to international airports in Pittsburgh and Washington, DC, respectively.
