Thomas Jefferson University, located in Philadelphia PA, is currently seeking a Program Director and Faculty member of Medical Laboratory Science in the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences and Biotechnology, Jefferson College of Health Professions (JCHP). This position, reporting to the Chairperson of the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences and Biotechnology serves in a leadership role in the development of Medical Laboratory Science and related technology education at Thomas Jefferson University. Primary responsibilities involve the coordination of curriculum and academic standards, faculty development, teaching, scholarship, and faculty governance.

The Medical Laboratory Science program enrolls 50-75 students per year at the undergraduate and graduate levels. It is fully accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS).

POSITION TITLE: Program Director, Medical Laboratory Science (MLS)


  1. Minimum Masters Degree in MLS or related field
  2. Minimum of three years experience in MLS or related field
  3. Minimum of 2 years of didactic and laboratory teaching experience
  4. Proven expertise in technical, laboratory, and research areas related to Biotechnology


1. University and Community:

a. Assume a leadership role in the development of MLS and related education at Thomas Jefferson University.
b. Serve as a liaison between the program and the professions included in MLS.
c. Interpret trends in MLS education to the Chair of the Department of MLSB, including public policy regarding education, industry standards, MLS practice and service delivery.
d. Represent the Department and College to community and professional groups.
e. Engage actively in professional association activities.

2. Education Coordination and Academic Standards:

a. Develop educational policies affecting the program in MLS for approval by the Chair of the Department of MLSB.
b. Maintain academic standards that satisfy the requirements of Thomas Jefferson University for undergraduate, graduate, certificate and categorical and/or specialty track programs in MLS and its included disciplines, and those established by the appropriate accrediting agencies, as applicable.
c. Coordinate the planning, implementation and evaluation of current and innovative programmatic and departmental curricula in cooperation with the Chair of the Department of MLSB.
d. Coordinate the laboratory and clinical education functions of the program in MLS and related technology education, through the Chair of the Department of MLSB, with appropriate representatives of participating departments of Thomas Jefferson University, University research laboratories, and affiliated institutions and corporations.
e. Ensure all accreditation requirements (NAACLS) are met and current.
f. Ensure practicum assignments of students that meet NAACLS requirements at clinical sites where we have approved affiliation agreements.
g. Conduct courses in the area(s) of expertise at the graduate and undergraduate levels, and participate in MLSB core curriculum courses as appropriate and necessary.
h. Work closely with the Department’s Education Coordinator to ensure appropriate tracking of student issues, changes in student status, and degree tracking.
i. Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of MLS specific laboratory and related equipment.

3. Faculty Development, Scholarship and Research:

a. Actively pursue, promote, facilitate and encourage research activities, programs and publications among and by faculty and students.
b. Participate in professional scholarly activities as a representative of the Department, College and University.
c. Initiate and maintain relationships with present and potential sponsors of departmental, program and research activities

4. Administration and Faculty Governance:

a. Coordinate and participate in the recruitment, admission, retention and progression of students in cooperation with the Offices of Admissions and Enrollment Management and Student Affairs and Services.
b. Recommend to the Chair of the Department of MLSB budget allocations for program and special project operating expenses.
c. Participate in departmental, College and/or University committees, task forces, etc., as appropriate.
d. Assume additional responsibilities as assigned by the Chair of the Department or the Dean.


  • The Program Director is responsible to the Chair of the Department of Medical Laboratory Sciences and Biotechnology of the Jefferson College of Health Professions for the performance of his/her duties.

Qualified applicants will possess a Masters or Doctorate degree and current MLS (ASCP) certification. In addition, qualified applicants will have a minimum of 3 years teaching experience. Demonstrated experience in Medical Lab Science education, administration, curriculum design and delivery, strategic planning, and NACCLS accreditation procedures a plus. Immunohematology experience also preferred.
