The George Mason University Department of Geography and Geoinformation Science (GGS), within the College of Science, invites applications for a tenure-track faculty position at the Assistant Professor level in Remote Sensing/GIScience beginning August 2017. Responsibilities:

  • Provide core support to our successful and growing GIScience and GeoInformatics programs;
  • Teach core and advanced courses at the undergraduate and graduate levels (the equivalent of two courses each semester);
  • Develop new courses as needed in an area of specialization;
  • Mentor graduate students at both the master’s and Ph.D. levels; and
  • Develop an externally funded research portfolio that will advance the mission of GGS.

Required Qualifications:

The department is particularly interested in applicants with specialization in Remote Sensing and/or GIScience. We seek a scholar who will complement and enhance the department’s reputation for excellence in research, and undergraduate and graduate instruction. Required qualifications include:

  • Ph.D. in remote sensing, geography, geoinformatics, or a closely related field;
  • Strong commitment to research and teaching excellence;
  • Exceptional oral and written communication skills; and
  • Ability to work in interdisciplinary research teams.

Preferred Qualifications:

We are particularly interested in candidates with strong research interests in either:

  • Urban remote sensing; and
  • Urban systems, health geography, and citizen science as it relates to urban systems and/or health geography.

Preference will be given to candidates with a proven research and teaching track record in one or more of these areas of expertise.
