Position Summary

The Department of Chemistry at Morehouse College invites applications for a tenure track Assistant Professor position beginning August 2027. Applications are encouraged in all fields, although scientists with training in biochemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, or chemical biology are particularly encouraged to apply. The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, or a related field, and postdoctoral experience.

Candidates who apply are asked to identify their strengths and experiences in assisting Black men and men of color from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds to accomplish curricular goals. Responsibilities include teaching lectures and laboratories (a 3-3 load); teaching both introductory and advanced undergraduate courses.

The successful candidate will also be expected to support the College's general education curriculum (https://morehouse.edu/academics/general-education/); advise and mentor undergraduate students; develop a strong externally funded research program in their field of expertise involving undergraduate students while maintaining a scholarly research and publication agenda; and provide service to the department and the College. We also encourage faculty to be active in soliciting external funding through grants and other sources.

Minimum qualifications include a Ph.D. in Chemistry, or a related area; commitment to excellence in teaching; evidence for the development of a productive research/scholarship program; and service to the profession and community.

Required Qualifications

• Education: Ph.D. in Chemistry or a closely related field from an accredited institution.

• Demonstrated potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching (i.e., teaching assistantships, prior course instruction, or related experience, etc.).

• Evidence of scholarly productivity including peer-reviewed publications or equivalent research output.

• Demonstrated potential to develop and maintain an externally funded research program that actively engages undergraduate students.

• Commitment to mentoring and supporting students from diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds, particularly Black men and men of color.

• Strong oral and written communication skills for teaching, advising, and scholarly dissemination.

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated potential for excellence in undergraduate teaching (i.e., teaching assistantships, prior course instruction, or related experience, etc.) at the advanced level in analytical chemistry; biochemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, or chemical biology; and/or inorganic chemistry.

• Ability to integrate modern pedagogical practices, including active learning and the use of technology, into instruction.
• Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to balance teaching, research, advising, and service commitments.
• Capacity to collaborate effectively with colleagues within the department, across the College, and with external partners.
• Commitment to fostering an inclusive and equitable academic environment.
• Willingness to pursue external grants and funding opportunities to support research and student development.

Essential Duties/Responsibilities

• Teach undergraduate lecture and laboratory courses in general chemistry, and lecture and laboratory courses in inorganic or bioinorganic chemistry (biochemistry, bioinorganic chemistry, or chemical biology; and/or inorganic chemistry) ; in total a 3-3 teaching load.
• Develop and deliver both introductory and advanced-level undergraduate chemistry courses.
• Incorporate innovative, student-centered pedagogies and inclusive teaching practices.
• Contribute to the College's general education curriculum and learning outcomes.
• Establish and maintain a productive research program in applicant's area of expertise that actively involves undergraduate students.
• Seek and secure external funding to support research and student development.
• Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at professional conferences.
• Advise and mentor undergraduate students on academic and career goals.
• Provide support for students from diverse backgrounds, particularly Black men and men of color.
• Participate in departmental, college, and professional service, including committee work.
• Engage with professional organizations and stay current in the discipline.
• Contribute to the mission of Morehouse College by supporting programs and initiatives that advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and student success.
