Description
The Assistant/Associate Professor of Biology serves in the Natural Sciences Department at Piedmont University. The faculty teach undergraduate courses in biology. Specific responsibilities are teaching introductory biology courses with the associated labs, as well as courses in areas of interest or expertise. The position also provides an opportunity to direct student research. Additional duties include departmental service and advising. This is a non-tenure track position, this is a permanent, full-time position intended for long-term colleagues who are an integral part of our departmental faculty.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Effective classroom and lab teaching and interacting with students in a professional manner.
Maintaining accurate and secure records
of student grades, attendance, and advisement.
Maintaining high standards of professionalism in all courses' content, objectives,
teaching, and grading.
Maintaining an understanding of college policies and their respective colleges' curriculum and degree
requirements.
Participating in departmental, school, and college faculty meetings and serving on committees as
appropriate.
Contributing to the ongoing operation of their respective departments and colleges.
Assessing their teaching
effectiveness via annual
portfolios and evaluating courses formally in accordance with official college procedure.
Assuring their
availability to students,
faculty, staff, and administrators by posting and keeping reasonable office hours, as determined by the dean of
their respective
colleges.
Maintaining a professional level of scholarship by continuous study, research, and attendance and
participation at
professional meetings. The college supports these
activities through departmental travel funds and the faculty
development program.
Other relevant duties as assigned.
Regular and predictable attendance is required.
On-site work is
required.
Incumbents must
remain relevant in the area of employment and flexible to changes in work related to institutional needs.
Typical Qualifications
Education and Qualifications
Ph.D. in biology or a related
field
Preference
will be given to candidates with the following:
- Use of active learning strategies and student-centered policies.
- Desire to become an active member of a thriving department.
- Ability to teach Anatomy and Physiology and/or Microbiology.
Licenses and Certifications
Valid Georgia Driver’s License (or obtained within 30 days of hire date) and
satisfactory MVR.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Working knowledge of teaching courses in a higher education
environment.
Ability to combine several pieces of information and draw conclusions.
Ability to use reasoning to discover and answer
problems.
Skill in using original, unusual, and/or creative ways to solve problems.
Ability to speak clearly so listeners can
understand.
Ability to understand written and spoken information.

Environmental, Physical, and Visual Acuity Factors
Work will be performed inside environmental conditions:
Protection from
weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. Incumbents will perform primarily sedentary work, exerting
up to 10 pounds
of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise
move objects,
including the human body. Incumbents will regularly get up and down from a seated position, reach, bend, and stand throughout
the
day.
Incumbents must have close visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, transcribe, view a computer terminal, and
read
extensively.
