Overview

The School of Sciences in the College of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics at Clayton State University is seeking applicants for an Assistant Professor of Biology position. The position an academic year, tenure-track appointment that reports to the Director of the School of Sciences. The successful candidate will be expected to begin on August 1, 2024. Salary will be commensurate with experience and competitive with comparable programs. In compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986, proof of authorization to work in the U.S. will be required at the time of hire.

Part of the University System of Georgia, Clayton State University is located 15 minutes from downtown Atlanta in a beautiful lakeside setting. The School of Sciences consists of 20 full-time faculty members and houses degree programs in Biology and Chemistry. We offer courses and labs in a variety of fields with an emphasis on high-quality undergraduate teaching and undergraduate research. Qualifications

Required qualifications:

  • A doctoral degree in Biology (ABD candidates will be considered) or other related discipline.
  • Ability and desire to teach organismal biology courses
  • Ability and desire to teach lower division courses and labs for majors and non-majors
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal communication skills

Desirable qualifications:

  • Successful college teaching experience or the potential to be successful at college teaching.
  • Ability and desire to teach a variety of courses and/or labs in the field of Organismal Biology (Examples: Comparative Vertebrate Anatomy and lab, Animal Physiology and Lab, Evolution, Neurobiology, Physiology, or other courses in area of expertise), Principles of Biology sequence for science majors, and non-science major courses and labs.
  • Ability and desire to teach Anatomy and Physiology lectures and labs for health sciences majors.
  • Willingness to participate in innovative, evidence-based teaching practices.
  • A team-player with a commitment to working in a department that prioritizes collaboration.
  • Experience and/or enthusiasm for mentoring undergraduate students in research projects with limited resources.
  • Experience with (or willingness to learn) utilizing course management systems in teaching and/or implementing online courses.

Minimum Education Requirements:

  • The candidate must have a doctorate in Biology or related discipline (ABD candidates will be considered).

Responsibilities Summary

  • Teach the introductory biology sequences (biology majors and non-majors), upper-level biology courses, and Anatomy and Physiology courses and labs. (Instruction of students accounts for 60% of the job duties for a tenure-track position)
  • Engage in scholarly activity leading to presentation and publication. (Scholarship and Professional Development accounts for 20% of the job duties for a tenure-track position)
  • Develop courses in your area of expertise.
  • Participate in service to Department, School, University, and community. (Service accounts for 20% of the job duties for a tenure-track position)
  • Serve as a career mentor for biology students.
