The Assistant Professor, Earth & Space Science will serve multiple roles as teacher, mentor, colleague, and scholar. The faculty will have a demonstrated knowledge and expertise in the content area as well as relevant methodologies, tools, techniques, and meaningful applications. The faculty will be able to exhibit sound instructional methods drawn from the scholarship of teaching and learning and cultivates a supportive learning environment that allows students to think critically and experiment with material. Faculty are not only expected to excel in classroom instruction but also to fulfill various responsibilities as active members of the division and the wider college community.

Essential Functions

  • Provide an engaging Earth & Space Science experience to students in a technology-rich collaborative laboratory environment.
  • Mentor and advise students across all STEM majors
  • Actively participate in maintaining and developing STEM courses and programs
  • Participate in articulation agreement discussions with STEM programs at local four-year colleges and universities
  • Actively contribute to the college through participation in college meetings and committees.
  • Maintain regular office hours to support students and advisees.

The specific teaching assignment will be based upon the needs of the students and the division and may include evening/weekend courses. Course load is shared between campuses are typically offered at the Marple and/or Downingtown campuses; however, there may be expectations for teaching at any of the DCCC campuses or online.

The successful candidate must be an engaging, effective, innovative, dynamic teacher who fosters collaboration with faculty, staff, and students. The applicant must be committed to the community college philosophy and will exhibit a commitment to improving access and retention to higher education for students from under-represented communities and who are traditionally under-represented in higher education. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate excellent teaching skills and show evidence of being more committed to teaching than to research. The applicant also must have the ability to employ a variety of teaching methods and be familiar with alternative learning styles, classroom technologies, and course management systems. The Faculty will also have a proven ability to encourage, model, embrace, and incorporate diverse thought and perspective of all individuals of various backgrounds, ideas, and perspectives to foster an all-inclusive environment.

Education & Experience:

  • Qualified candidates must have a Master’s degree (Doctorate preferred) from an accredited institution in the field of Earth/Space Sciences and/or Science Education with significant graduate-level Earth and Space Science coursework.  Applicant must be able to exhibit the ability to teach all general Earth & Space Science courses.  Candidates must have teaching experience at the secondary and/or undergraduate level, and college-level teaching experience in non-major laboratory courses is preferred. Candidates should be comfortable using technology, software, and laboratory equipment as part of a collaborative laboratory curriculum (experience with field methods, observational astronomy, and geographic information systems (GIS) is preferred). The College is specifically seeking applicants with a strong background, demonstrated ability, and a genuine desire to teach science courses designed for non-science majors in a community college setting.
