Santa Rosa Junior College is seeking an enthusiastic and engaging individual with a love for astronomy and desire to impart that passion to our general education students using innovative instructional methods. Join an outstanding team of faculty and instructional administrators who provide high quality programs and services to our district, our community, and most importantly, our students. This is a full-time, regular contract position in the Earth and Space Sciences Department at Santa Rosa Junior College on the Santa Rosa campus. The position begins Fall Semester, August 2024. Appointments are contingent upon funding and Board approval.

Essential Functions

  • Provide excellent instruction and support to students, which may include evening, weekend, online or hybrid, and/or off-campus assignments.
  • Provide academic assistance and related services to students during scheduled office hours.
  • Demonstrate sensitivity to and understanding of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff.
  • Maintain currency in field(s) of expertise.
  • Participate in fundamental activities including, but not limited to, attending department meetings, assessing student learning outcomes, developing and revising curriculum, attending professional development activities, and evaluating other department faculty.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s Degree in Physics, Astronomy, or Astrophysics
  • OR Bachelor’s Degree in Physics or Astronomy AND Master’s Degree in Engineering, Mathematics, Meteorology, or Geophysics
  • OR the equivalent
  • OR a fully satisfied (Life) California Community College Instructor’s Credential in Astronomy, or Astro Physics.

A sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Upper division or graduate course work, research experience, and/or teaching experience in Astronomy
  • Experience using telescopes with students or the public
  • Planetarium experience, or willingness to learn to use this equipment to engage students
  • Experience developing curriculum and assessing Student Learning Outcomes
  • Training in best practices for online learning and/or demonstrated enthusiasm and ability to design and teach high quality courses using Canvas or a similar Learning Management System
  • Experience implementing equity-minded pedagogy in a diverse learning environment to community college students.
