Purpose of PositionThe Department of Physics, Geology, and Engineering Technology invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin August 2020. We will consider candidates who have achieved ABD status.
This new position is a part of our strategy with a focus on strengthening research, basic and applied, and teaching in geosciences at NKU. Applicants must have expertise in at least one of the following areas: stratigraphy, tectonics, petrology, hydrogeology or environmental geology. The successful candidate will be expected to teach both introductory and upper-level undergraduate classes, pursue an active research program that includes undergraduate students, and participate in co-curricular departmental activities.
The Geology program has five full-time faculty and approximately fifty undergraduate Geology majors and minors. Our program provides students with classroom and field-based learning opportunities in diverse fields including geology, geophysics, and environmental science. The department offers baccalaureate degrees in physics, engineering physics, geology, and three specialties in engineering technology as well as pre-engineering transfer programs.
The faculty of the department include eleven tenured/tenure-track faculty and twelve full-time lecturers.

Primary ResponsibilitiesThe position responsibilities of the successful candidate for this job position include, but not limited to:
- Teach introductory geology courses
- Teach upper level courses, including in the faculty member’s specialty
- Establish an active and sustainable research program that involves NKU’s undergraduate students, promotes student engagement, and improves the quality of undergraduate learning
- Participate in service activities of the department
- Advise and mentor undergraduate students
- Doctorate in Earth Sciences or related field is required
- Expertise in at least one of the following fields: stratigraphy, tectonics, petrology, hydrogeology and environmental geology
- Demonstrated effective teaching experience at the undergraduate-level is required
- Committed to establishing a research program in the geological sciences that involves training and mentoring undergraduate student researchers
- Proven record of scholarly research in the geological sciences
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with students with diverse social identities and backgrounds
