Statement of Job:

The University of Maine Presque Isle is seeking a broadly-trained chemist for a 9-month tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level with an anticipated start date of September 2023. The successful candidate will bring a demonstrated ability to teach general and organic chemistry to a broad range of students within the sciences, allied health majors, and general education, and to mentor undergraduate researchers. This chemist will join colleagues in biology, environmental science, geology, and agricultural science with a strong emphasis on experiential education and undergraduate research.

Essential Duties:

Primary teaching responsibilities will include General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and possibly a course emphasizing the candidate’s area of interest or expertise, for example, in some area of environmental chemistry, soil chemistry, or biological chemistry Oversight of the chemistry teaching and research labs along with adjunct instructors is expected. Willingness to assist in maintaining chemical inventories and managing hazardous waste is required. Since we do not offer a Chemistry major, advising responsibilities will be limited to students pursuing a Chemistry minor. Research involving undergraduates is expected, and modest external funding, conference presentations, and/or occasional publications will be desired outcomes of this effort. A functional chemistry research lab space is available. Professional service activities as well as serving on 1-2 campus committees is expected.

This position will teach 4 lecture or lab sections each semester (12 contact hours) and the schedule will be variable based on teaching schedule and research demands. Work beyond regular hours (which may include nights and weekends) may be necessary in order to meet the requirements of the position. The employee will establish regular office hours on campus.
